Thrive’s Emergency Department program integrates our Certified Peer Recovery Supporters with traditional hospital services to provide a recovery-oriented system of care that is patient-centered. Through ThriveED, peer supporters are connected with patients who present with an overdose or substance use-related issue in hospital emergency rooms around Ohio prior to discharge.
Meeting individuals at this critical juncture certified Peer Recovery Supporters can offer hope in the emergency room setting when all may seem lost. Moreover, they can link individuals with immediate treatment options and assistance post-discharge.
A Healthcare Partner Testimonial
“Since we launched our collaboration in 2020, during the heart of the COVID pandemic, we have seen the incredible value that Thrive brings to our patients. Thrive peer supporters have become integral members of our care teams – both in our Emergency Departments and, more recently, on inpatient medical/surgical units. Thrive peer supporters help to influence and expand care planning, by providing patients with outreach and individualized care opportunities, all from their perspective of lived experiences. With the participation of Thrive, patients start their recovery journey with support, resources, and continuity after hospital discharge.”
Impact Story: integrated PRS: Becky Bakalik, M.Ed., LICDC-CS | Chemical Dependency Counselor | MetroHealth Recovery Services
“Nancy Joseph has been the peer supporter for MetroHealth Recovery Services (MHRS) at Parma for 3+ years and is an invaluable member of our team. She is especially important to our Intensive Outpatient and MAT programs as she is always available to meet with our patients who struggle with their recovery and don’t have others in their life who understand what they’re going through. Frankly, our patients would be lost without the peer support, empathy, and empowerment that Nancy provides them. They (the patients) repeatedly tell us (the staff) how much Nancy means to them and to their recovery. She is present in the IOP groups and even helps facilitate some of them by doing a peer support activity at least once a week. She is asked to reach out to the patients once a week but, due to her compassion and concern for them, is available more often and will talk to them as much as she can and as much as they need. Nancy is also present during our team meetings and gives valuable feedback on the progress of our patients and suggestions for services for which they can benefit. She is willing to provide staff information on these resources and links patients as needed. I think I can speak for the entire MHRS staff when I say that Nancy is a great asset to all the components of our department. I routinely receive positive feedback about her work and character, and her dedication to her own recovery, Thrive, and MetroHealth is obvious. I am personally very grateful for Nancy Joseph!”
