Substance Use Treatment Month is a time to shine a light on recovery, reduce stigma, and remind people that help is not only available—it is worth reaching for. For many, the path to treatment can feel overwhelming, uncertain, and filled with barriers. But recovery is possible, and no one should have to walk that road alone.
At Thrive, we believe that treatment works best when it is rooted in compassion, connection, and community. Our Director of Health Systems, Avril Chuppa, knows this not just professionally, but personally.
When Substance Use Feels Like There’s No Way Out
Before recovery, Avril’s life felt trapped in a cycle that many know all too well—legal consequences, mounting debt, chasing the next high, watching loved ones exhaust themselves trying to help, and grieving friends lost to addiction. Everything felt heavy, chaotic, and unmanageable.
“I wished someone would save me from the nightmare,” Avril shared. Yet despite the pain, she didn’t ask for help. Like so many others, she thought she knew what help would look like—and she didn’t want it.
It wasn’t until another legal consequence that clarity finally came. Standing in court, tired of lying and pretending she didn’t have a problem, Avril realized this was not the life she wanted anymore. For the first time, she asked her parents for help.
What she found wasn’t judgment—it was relief, love, and understanding. They already knew. They were just waiting for her to be ready.
Treatment Is Possible – Even When Barriers Feel Huge
Getting into treatment wasn’t easy. Like many individuals seeking care, Avril faced real obstacles: securing identification, navigating insurance, and waiting for bed availability. The system can feel complicated and discouraging, especially when someone is already vulnerable.
But with consistent support and people willing to walk beside her, she made it into treatment.
This experience is why Substance Use Treatment Month matters so deeply. Too often, people don’t seek help because they assume they know the answer already – or because previous attempts didn’t work. But recovery is not about perfection or a single try.
“If you are trying to get help,” Avril encourages, “please do not count out options because you feel confident you know the answer. Ask. Seek help. Try something new. Let yourself get pointed in the right direction.”
Recovery Looks Different for Everyone
Today, Avril’s life’s theme continues—but in reverse. In recovery, she now helps offer hope, challenge misconceptions, and show that recovery has multiple pathways. Not everyone has family support. Not everyone has resources. Not everyone knows where to turn.
That’s where Thrive comes in.
At Thrive, peer support exists to be that village—to help reduce barriers so individuals can focus on healing. Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens through shared humanity, understanding, and people who are willing to show up.
As Avril puts it:
“Willingness needs to be on both sides, for the person who is struggling and for the village that is required to help raise that person out of the dark. As providers, we need to be willing to stretch to meet the hand in need.”
A Message for Providers: You Need a Village Too
Substance Use Treatment Month is also a reminder for those working in recovery and healthcare. This work is meaningful—but it can also be heavy. Providers, peer supporters, and clinicians cannot pour from an empty cup.
“If you are a provider,” Avril shares, “please be sure to have your village. Thrive works because we lean on each other so we can help others achieve great things.”
Compassion isn’t just a value—it’s best practice. Research continues to show that empathy and human connection can save lives. Whether you are supporting clients, peers, or colleagues, the way we show up matters.
Recovery Is Always Worth Another Try
If you or someone you love feels hopeless after trying before, remember this: recovery is not measured by how many times you’ve fallen—it’s measured by your willingness to get back up.
Recovery is possible for everyone. Treatment works. And no matter where you are on your journey, you deserve support, dignity, and hope.
